Why We Started Growing, Cooking & Making Our Own Answers
There's a story behind every Liferoot box that leaves our hands, and why these non-toxic foods, goods and products are what they are.
Some products are born through strength & challenge: their son has eczema, daughter with food allergies, or mom has cancer.
Some come through joy or necessity: a baby is born, a tea for sleep or menopause, or a beautiful candle that lights the room at a dinner party.
They are all dear to my heart, and I have such joy in creating & serving my community this way.
Our new Homestead Box is just that, and has a lot of purposeful meaning behind it.
It started with food allergies for my family. When my daughter was born, food allergies were our day to day: reading every label, asking every server, learning the hard way which "healthy" foods weren't actually safe for us. That kind of experience changes how you see food. You stop trusting the package and start asking what's actually in it, where it came from, and who touched it before it got to you.
That question eventually turned into a career. Training as a nutritional therapist meant sitting across from people who were dealing with the same frustration we were dealing with, people trying to heal, but stuck because so much of what's on grocery store shelves simply isn't built for bodies that need something different.
Gluten sensitivities, food intolerances, inflammation that wouldn't budge no matter what "clean" packaged product they tried next.
I kept seeing the same gap: people needed real, alternative foods while they healed, and that food was hard to find, harder to trust, and often priced like a luxury even when it was mediocre.
So Brad and I decided to grow, craft and cook the answer ourselves.
We have modeled this in many ways over the years, in Liferoot & in our personal lives. Cooking for communities, helping people create permaculture in their yards, teaching people how to grow veggies, fruits & herbs, how to bake bread, make balm, and grow herbs for tea.
Cooking for staff, neighbors, providing them with nourishing food, and anyone who will eat really. :) Teaching about clean food, how it balances the mind, body and spirit. Showing patients and clients how to make things that deeply nourish the soul, bring joy, and keep the body happy & healthy.
We do it as an act of love. Love that we can hopefully pass on and they will pass on.
For nourishment in a world that sometimes lacks.
That's the heart of the Homestead Box, our local goods, our Beauty Box, and gluten free scratch kitchen.
We wanted foods & goods that were actually nutritious & actually good, made in small batches, by hand, from ingredients we know and trust.
That mindset shapes everything we grow and everything we bake. It's slower. It's more work. But it's also why the food and goods are different, why they feel different on your skin, taste better, and why it is more nourishing.
Why we believe it's worth building a box around. We hope you will check it out :) and if you have any questions, hit reply and let’s chat.
