Back to School Doesn't Have to Be Perfect to Be Nourishing
BY AMY LUPTON
This season doesn't have to be perfect to be nourishing. A few small, consistent things, food, light, movement, and a little wind-down ritual, go a lot further than trying to do it all "right." Here are the ones I lean on with my own family.
Food as Medicine: Nourishing Lunch Pairs
The easiest way to keep lunches nutrient-dense without extra time in the kitchen is to think in pairs, protein + fat + something alive (fresh or fermented):
Hard-boiled egg + avocado + a handful of berries
Turkey or chicken roll-ups + cucumber slices + a spoon of sauerkraut + raw cheese
Nut or seed butter on our gluten-free sourdough or organic rice cakes + apple slices
Bone broth in a thermos + roasted sweet potato cubes or fruit
Full-fat yogurt + honey + a sprinkle of granola
Small swaps like these keep blood sugar steadier through the school day, which means fewer afternoon meltdowns for them and for you.
Light as Medicine
Morning light within the first 30-60 minutes of waking helps set the whole family's circadian rhythm, better sleep, better mood, better energy for the day ahead.
It doesn't need to be complicated: coffee on the porch while they eat breakfast, or a walk to the bus stop instead of the car line.
The bookend to that is evening light. A sunset walk as a family, even just 10-15 minutes around the block to walk the dogs, tells the body it's time to start winding down. It's become one of my favorite small rituals: no phones, just feet on the ground and watching the sun go down.
Movement That Doesn't Take Time
You need movement that fits into the cracks of the day:
Stretching on the living room floor while dinner simmers, 5 minutes, everyone can join
A quick dance break to reset energy before homework
Walking the dog together after dinner instead of splitting up
The goal isn't intensity, it's regulation. Movement helps kids (and us) process the sensory overload of a full school day.
Winding Down at Night
This is where I see families skip the most, and where a little intention pays off the most:

Candling down the lights an hour before bed, dim lamps instead of overheads, signals melatonin production to start.

A Few Herbs Worth Knowing This Season
Chamomile: gentle, calming, great for kids and adults before bed
Lemon balm: eases nervous energy and supports digestion after a big day
Nettle: mineral-rich, a great addition to tea for overall nourishment during a busy season
The Real Takeaway
You don't need to overhaul your routine to make this season nourishing. A nutrient-dense lunch, a little morning and evening light, a few minutes of movement, and a calming wind-down at night, that's more than enough. Perfect was never the goal. Nourished is.
